Aircraft modelism is an exciting, but quite serious activity. In order to make truly high-quality models, you need to get not only good drawings, but also with high-quality materials and tools. In this article, we will try to consider the main materials that are used for modeling, and compare them.

So, most often for the manufacture of aircraft models, a balm is recommended. The balm is a fairly rare variety of wood, which is characterized by strength and lightness, and therefore is ideal for parlias and for creating other aircraft models. The balm is considered the lightest wood in the world, however, the birthplace of the balm tree is South America, and therefore in our conditions it was almost impossible to get a balm for a long time. Fortunately, today there are many suppliers who sell a variety of materials for modelism, including balm.

Often for many details of air models and layouts, linden is used. Its main advantage is that linden is perfectly cut, and thanks to this linden has long been used in artistic thread and modeling. Often a linden veneer is used as an alternative to Balse, but still, in its qualities, the balm is more suitable for the manufacture of models.

If there is no linden in your arsenal, aspen or poplar wood can be used as a replacement for it.

It is noteworthy that in many literary sources for modeling it is recommended to use bamboo to make many parts. Due to their properties, bamboo slats are easily cut and split along the fibers, and in addition, they are easy to give in all kinds of processing.

In addition to wood of different varieties for the construction of aircraft models, materials such as:

– cardboard, paper;

– veneer of linden;

– paints, waxes, varnishes;

– tubes, profiles, rods;

– wire;

– plastic;

– putty;

– Lupa with backlight.

However, undoubtedly very important for modelism is glue. When preparing models, it is very important to choose the right glue, since for different materials and for different varieties of wood, various types of glue will be more appropriate. So, an ordinary PVA is good for gluing wood and paper, for gluing wood and lavsan film – a more reliable glue “moment”, and in other cases – casein glue, epoxy glue and other special varieties for gluing wood elements of wood.
