In early February, a five-foot-long miniature boat built by students in New Hampshire back in 2020 was found on the Norwegian island of Smøla.
The tiny boat traveled more than 8,000 miles (almost 13,000 kilometers) across the Atlantic in 462 days.
Students at Rye Jr. High School began building the boat as a science project to learn about currents, science, and math. They worked with Educational Passages, a nonprofit that teaches kids about the ocean.
The students were just getting ready to decorate their boat, which they named Rye Riptides, when Covid-19 sent them home for the rest of the school year. But the students continued the project even while they were remote. They sent their drawings to their teachers and Educational Passages. Their work was scanned, printed, laminated, and glued to the deck of the boat.
